Arwa Hanin Elrayess Becomes First Palestinian President of Oxford Union
The Oxford Union, one of the United Kingdom’s most historic and influential student societies, has elected a Palestinian student as its president for the first time in its 202 year history.
Arwa Hanin Elrayess, a Palestinian Algerian student pursuing Philosophy, Politics and Economics at St Edmund’s Hall, will lead the renowned institution during the Trinity term of 2026.
Currently serving on the Union’s standing committee, she has been deeply involved in student advocacy and previously contributed to Heart of a Protest, a documentary capturing pro Palestine solidarity demonstrations in London.
Her election generated widespread appreciation, including from her family. Her father, Mohamed Elrayess, shared his pride as she becomes the first Arab woman, the first Palestinian, and the first Algerian to assume the presidency of the Oxford Union.
Elrayess won with 757 first preference votes, leading by 150 votes over her closest competitor. Voter turnout reached 1,528, a significant rise from the previous term.
Established in 1823, the Oxford Union is globally known for its high profile speaker events, competitive debates, and programs that enhance public speaking and leadership skills.
