Punjab School Teachers Ordered to Wear Black Gowns During School Hours
The Government of Punjab has introduced a new dress code for teachers serving in public sector schools, mandating the wearing of black gowns during school hours.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department on February 19, the policy will take effect from February 23, Monday. All Chief Executive Officers of District Education Authorities have been directed to ensure uniform implementation of the guidelines across the province.
The notification highlights that teaching is a profession associated with respect, authority, and moral responsibility. It states that a teacher’s dignity and credibility are reflected through conduct and professional appearance, and that a standardized dress code will strengthen respect among students, parents, and the wider community.
Under the revised policy, all teachers, irrespective of gender, cadre, or posting location, must wear a black gown over modest and culturally appropriate attire during school hours. Male teachers are advised to wear plain or subtle colored shalwar kameez or pants with shirts, along with closed shoes or strapped sandals. Female teachers are instructed to wear dignified attire complemented by closed shoes or modest sandals.
School heads will be responsible for ensuring daily compliance, while district level CEOs have been tasked with monitoring and strictly enforcing the new regulations.
